The Sands Point Preserve on the original Guggenheim Estate embodies the grandeur and elegance that define the Gold Coast period of the early 20th century, when prominent American families built great mansions on large estates as summer retreats along the Long Island Sound. Sands Point was the famed “East Egg” of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.”
Today, the magnificent 216-acre park, including its historic mansions and the Phil Dejana Learning Center, is owned by Nassau County, NY, and is maintained and operated by the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Conservancy provides year-round educational and cultural programs, seasonal celebrations, mansion tours, fitness activities as well as private/corporate event services and film/TV location facilities.
Long Island Forest Walks is delighted to an educator in relationship with Sands Point. Our monthly public forest walks add a unique value to all that Sands Point Preserve offers.
$35 per person for Sands Point Preserve members; $40 per person for non-members. Parking is included in the registration fee.
Walks are 2.5 hours and times depend on the season and the availability of daylight, as well as the hours of operation at the preserve. Your certified forest therapy guide, Linda Lombardo, brings portable camping stools and hand warmers, in colder weather, and there's always a thermos of piping hot organically foraged tea for the tea ceremony at the end of the walk. (nothing is foraged at the preserve unless it's been cut for pruning)
Ages 16 and up, please. Walks for families with young ones are being scheduled for the near future.
More about forest therapy: Like a yoga practice or meditation, forest therapy builds your mindfulness, immune system and community with each walk. Come prepared to be outdoors with layers and anything else you might need to be a forest bather!
Forest Therapy is slow, mindful wandering in a nature area. No one needs to be an athlete! If you have any physical or health concerns, please let Linda know in advance. Even though we are walking and experiencing the arboretum together, each person is on his or her own journey.
