Bayard Cutting Arboretum's Public Forest Therapy Walks, Great River, NY
Each month, a different walk inspired by the season, the weather and the spirit of connecting with nature.
Inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku, Forest Bathing has been scientifically proven to boost immune strength, reduce stress, and improve cognitive functioning. But beyond these physiological changes, Forest Bathing also offers us the opportunity to deepen our relationship with the natural world. By slowing down and carefully observing with all our senses, we may notice incredible things that may have eluded us for our whole lives. In escaping the rapid pace of our daily routines, we may find unparalleled beauty in the moment and in doing so, relax into the beauty all around us.
On these walks, your certified guide, Linda, will offer a series of guided invitations to assist you in finding your own authentic way of interacting with the land. The end of each walk features a tea ceremony and some healthy snacks! There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Ages 15+, please. Just come and be yourself. The forest is inviting you home!
Bayard Cutting Arboretum is one of Long Island's treasures and a beautiful place to explore year round. Forest Therapy is an 'all-seasons' wellness practice and where better to reconnect to nature than this gorgeous arboretum! The walks are always different and in different parts of the arboretum. We may explore the gardens, the forested trails, the river, or stay in the groves with the Oaks, Dawn Redwoods and Weeping Beech.
$35 per person with 50% of the proceeds going to Bayard Cutting Arboretum's Natural Heritage fund. RSVP is currently required.
Walks are 2.5 hours depending on the season. Your certified forest therapy guide, Linda Lombardo, brings portable camping stools and hand warmers in colder weather. There is always a thermos of piping hot organically foraged tea for the tea ceremony at the end of the walk.
Like a yoga practice or meditation, forest therapy builds your mindfulness, immune system and community with each walk.
No one needs to be an athlete! If you have any physical or health concerns, please let Linda know in advance. Even though we are walking and experiencing the arboretum together, each person is on his or her own journey.
